Lessons learnt after a few months of posting
“I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter.” - Blaise Pascal
I’ve been posting for a couple of months on this blog now and sharing it on platforms like LinkedIn, BlueSky, and X! Overall, it’s been a lot of fun getting more into writing, but there are definitely some lessons learned along the way. Some of those lessons I’ll share here in the hopes of helping others on their blog writing or content sharing journey.
Posting Schedule
I set out to post once a week and largely achieved that!
What Helped:
- Having set dedicated time each week to write the content meant achieving the goal was much easier.
- Having a backlog of ideas over the years that I’ve wanted to write about but just didn’t make the writing process much faster - I already kind of knew what I wanted to say!
What Didn’t Quite Work:
- The weekly schedule is a bit rushed - I can only really dedicate a couple of hours per week to this, which limits the type of content I can write about. Some topics require more time and research to do them justice.
- On top of the research, actually distilling the information down or portraying it in a way that’s easy to consume is another time-consuming part of writing.
Counter-intuitively, I found myself writing longer posts than I would like, as creating brevity in writing takes more time than just rambling on!
Next Steps
My posts will likely be more ad-hoc, but I’ll aim for at least once a month. My time to dedicate to posts isn’t changing much, so I’ll rather spend more time on a single topic and create a better post at the end of it.
This could be diving deep into a topic and sharing the insights I glean, or building something myself and sharing the experience and lessons learned around the build. It will hopefully be more valuable content, but less frequent!
What to Expect?
I’m hoping to build out an MVP of an app that solves a problem for my wife and me - tracking activities and care routines for our son! I’m using it as an opportunity to dive deeper into AWS and expand my knowledge of that, and using it as an opportunity to share my lessons around hosting applications on AWS!
